Tottenham told relegation possible as ‘horrific’ claim made live on air
Rory Jennings believes it is fair to suggest Tottenham are embroiled in a Premier League relegation battle this season.
Spurs are 15th in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s (25 January) fixtures, eight points above Ipswich Town in the final relegation spot.
Ange Postecoglou’s side, who face Leicester City on Sunday (26 January), have been hit badly by injuries this season.
However, when it was pointed out by co-host Ade Oladipo live on talkSPORT [24 January, 7:38pm] that Spurs are without both first-choice centre-backs and their goalkeeper, Jennings hit back.
“[Postecoglou’s] right about some of what he says,” Oladipo said. “The injuries have been horrific.
“I don’t care what club you’re at, take away your goalkeeper and two centre-backs and you’re going to have a problem.”
Jennings replied: “I don’t understand why everyone is sympathetic. Why are [Micky] Van de Ven and [Cristian] Romero injured? Because they were forced back too soon.
“Ange has them in a relegation battle. I genuinely believe that. I don’t think they’ll go down, but there’s a conversation around Tottenham genuinely being relegated.”
Tottenham with work to do to avoid relegation debate
As of the here and now, Tottenham are not involved in a relegation battle. The eight-point gap on the bottom three is simply too big for that to be a genuine debate.
However, that can change in the space of one or two matches. Should Spurs lose to a terrible Leicester side this weekend, for example, and Ipswich somehow spring a surprise against Liverpool, that gap will be cut just like that.
The fact this is even a conversation says an awful lot about where Tottenham are right now. Seven wins from 22 league games is quite simply not good enough, and the form over the past few months is very much relegation form.
Unless Postecoglou can find a solution to his side’s slump, injuries or not, then the pressure will remain on the Australian.
After beating Hoffenheim in Europe in midweek, let’s hope the visit of Leicester provides a chance to truly kick on.
