Tottenham sack: Ange Postecoglou ‘on the brink’ ahead of Aston Villa clash
Ange Postecoglou’s future remains under intense scrutiny at Tottenham Hotspur after they crashed out of the EFL Cup at Anfield.
The Australian’s claims that he “always” picks up silverware in his second season were made to look fanciful by Liverpool in midweek, as they overturned Spurs’ 1-0 first-leg lead to thump them 4-0.
After that 4-1 aggregate loss in the semi-finals saw them dumped out of the EFL Cup, Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at Aston Villa does give them another chance to move towards silverware.
However, the manner of their loss to Liverpool leaves Postecoglou under intense pressure at Villa Park, with GiveMeSport reporting on 7 February that the axe could be swung if Spurs exit the FA Cup early.
Ange Posteocglou set to be sacked at Tottenham
It is reported that Postecoglou could be on the brink of the sack if his side fail to advance to the fifth round on Sunday, with their drubbing by Liverpool putting his position under the microscope.
Exiting two domestic cup competitions within just four days would leave the Europa League as the only silverware Postecoglou’s side can potentially lift come the end of the season.
Having been swept aside with ease by Liverpool – failing to even muster a shot on target – the nature of the defeat has left Spurs higher-ups doubting whether or not Postecoglou will see out the campaign.

Tottenham sack surely beckons for Ange Postecoglou
Given that Postecoglou’s promise of delivering second-season silverware in North London has been enough to receive the backing of Spurs’ board thus far, Thursday’s hammering will set alarm bells ringing.
Arriving at Anfield with a 1-0 lead – putting them at an immediate advantage – the Lilywhites were woeful in every sense of the word and looked nothing like a side with one foot potentially in a Wembley final.
Given they’re a lowly 14th in the Premier League table and 13 points off the European places, let alone in a title race, Postecoglou’s side threw away their best chance of a trophy in quite spectacular fashion.
Sunday’s fourth-round tie against Villa is by no means an easy task either given the two sides’ contrasting form at the moment, and the Australian’s claims earlier this term look likely to falter again.
At this rate, Postecoglou may not even see out his second season with Spurs, let alone win them a trophy, and as a decision from the hierarchy looms, Villa Park could well be his final stand.
