Tottenham ready new contract for star midfielder, meetings planned

Tottenham have initiated plans to tie one of their star midfielders down to a new contract ahead of the summer transfer window.

In what has largely been a dismal season for Tottenham, there has been the occasional positive when it comes to individual players.

However, injuries have prevented many of them from having a big impact, leading to the campaign fizzling out in the way it has.

Those injuries have also been the driving force behind the intense pressure on Ange Postecoglou who will be hoping that those concerns are now in the past, with Spurs looking to offer a fresh deal to one of those players to have suffered throughout the season.

Rodrigo Bentancur deal on the cards for Tottenham

Rodrigo Bentancur has been outstanding whenever he has featured for Tottenham, though that has been a rare occurrence this season with the Uruguayan international having been limited to just 16 Premier League appearances.

Despite that, Tottenham have “opened talks” with the midfielder regarding a new deal, as reported in the print edition of the Daily Mail (25 February, pg 67).

The report states that the talks are at an “early stage” with “future meetings planned in the coming weeks.”

If Spurs can secure a new deal for Bentancur, it would be a huge boost for everyone involved given his importance to the team when fit, and the quality he is capable of bringing to it.

Tottenham to secure the future of Bentancur

When fit, Bentancur is arguably the best midfielder at Spurs and one of the best in the Premier League, showcasing how important it is to get him a new deal.

His current deal runs until the end of the next campaign, though Spurs will be wary of the fact that he could agree on a pre-contract deal elsewhere in January if an agreement isn’t reached before then.

The Uruguay midfielder is a key part of this Tottenham side and his absence was certainly felt throughout the period in which he was unavailable.

If Spurs can sign off on a new contract, it would be a massive boost ahead of the new campaign in which they will be hoping to avoid a repeat of this season’s nightmares.
