Tottenham player torn to shreds by media in win v Liverpool – ‘Not up to scratch’

Dejan Kulusevski was torn to shreds in the Daily Mail for his Tottenham performance in their Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Spurs left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium victorious after beating the Reds 1-0 in the first of two legs (8 January).

While the Sweden international has often been the sole bright spark in Ange Postecoglou’s set-up this term, it’s clear that his performance wasn’t quite up to scratch with the Daily Mail rating him a 5.5/10.

“Frequently picked up the ball in dangerous positions but had a rare night where his final ball was not up to scratch,” the newspaper wrote via their print edition [8 January, page 71].

Tottenham will be hoping that Dejan Kulusevski’s performance v Liverpool was a one-off

There’s no hiding from the fact that the 2024/25 season has been a fairly difficult one for all those involved with Tottenham.

Spurs are currently sat 12th in the Premier League table and it feels like their hopes of a Champions League place are now miles away.

Of course, the sheer amount of defensive injuries that Postecoglou’s men have suffered has had a major part to play in the way things have gone this season but it still feels like they should have been far better prepared.

As aforementioned, Kulusevski has arguably been Spurs’ best player this season with the former Juventus attacker contributing to 15 goals across all competitions thus far.

Although Tottenham are going into the second leg of their Carabao Cup tie with a slight advantage over Arne Slot’s men, it feels like more needs to come from the team, especially at Anfield.

Only time will tell what the future holds but if Kulusevski ends up finding himself in a rut, it could end up turning Spurs’ season on its head once again.
