Tottenham player ratings v AZ Alkmaar – Son stars in 7/10, 4/10 flops
Tottenham booked a spot in the Europa League quarter finals with a 2-0 win against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.
The Lilywhites welcomed the Dutch outfit to North London on 13 March and were able to turn over a 1-0 aggregate scoreline to make it through.
Goals from Wilson Odobert and James Maddison put the N17 club ahead before a sloppy error from Lucas Bergvall allowed Peer Koopmeiners to level the tie.
A well worked second from Odobert proved to be the difference on the night, capping off a far from convincing performance regardless of the result.
Here, Tottenham News rates each Spurs player’s performance out of 10.
Guglielmo Vicario – 5
The Italian had so little to do until he picked the ball out of his net for the away side’s opener. This will have been disappointing but wasn’t down to him and ultimately was a spectator for large spells.
Pedro Porro – 5
Porro arguing with Maddison over a free kick was unnecessary on such a huge night for the N17 outfit. Besides this, the Spaniard did very little but did make himself available regularly going forward.
Cristian Romero – 5
The 26-year-old looked much improved from a tough day against Bournemouth and showed some of his usual grit and will have been highly frustrated to concede in such a manner.
Micky van de Ven – 5
It was disappointing to see the Dutchman go off so early, but Ange Postecoglou is focusing on the bigger picture. There was a change when he went off which is greatly frustrating, but in the end, Spurs secured the result they needed.
Djed Spence – 5
It was another positive night for the versatile full back but there is no doubt that his defensive showing could have been improved regardless of his attacking exploits at times.
Pape Sarr – 5
There is very little to say about Sarr as he didn’t truly contribute while he was on the pitch in any sort of manner.

Lucas Bergvall makes Tottenham error v AZ Alkmaar
Lucas Bergvall – 4
It is so frustrating that one moment of laziness is enough to harm the teenager’s rating. His poor pass into Odobert got the away side back level and full of confidence which could have had a telling impact on the scoreline.
James Maddison – 7
The attacking midfielder looked to be back to his best on the night before Thomas Tuchel names his first England squad. His goal was huge and capped off what was an excellent performance.
Stat | James Maddison v AZ Alkmaar |
Pass accuracy (%) | 94 |
Chances created | 2 |
Passes into final third | 10 |
Duels won | 2 |
Wilson Odobert – 7
Two goals while playing his part in an error leading to an Alkmaar goal results in an up and down showing for the Belgian. Ultimately it is his goals that has taken Spurs through so that is the most important thing.

Heung-Min Son back to his best
Son Hueng-min – 7
Another man who looked to be back to is best despite not picking up an assist is the Lilywhites’ skipper. A few overhit crosses won’t take away from a positive night’s work after weeks of stick.
Dominic Solanke – 6
Solanke was working on scraps for large periods of the clash but still managed to grab an excellent assist for Odobert’s second which capped off an excellent team move.
Substitutes
Archie Gray – 6
Yves Bissouma – 6
Brennan Johnson – 5
