Tottenham owner issues Daniel Levy with a Harry Kane ultimatum as speculation continues

Tottenham owner Joe Lewis has told Daniel Levy he must cash in on Harry Kane if he will not sign a new contract this summer, according to Standard Sport.

The newspaper reported online (24 July) that Lewis is reportedly not willing to lose Kane for free next summer and miss out on any potential transfer fee for the club’s star player.

German champions Bayern Munich have seen two bids for the England captain knocked back as they fell below Spurs’ valuation, which is reportedly thought to be upwards of £100million.

The 29-year-old is open to a move to the Bundesliga and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is keen on the situation being clarified sooner rather than later.

Immeasurable

There is no doubt about it, Kane’s impact on Spurs over the past eight years simply cannot be measured.

Throughout his time in North London, the striker has become Tottenham’s all-time record goalscorer, England’s all-time record goalscorer and broken many other records along the way.

Kane has scored 280 goals for Tottenham, 213 in the Premier League and 58 for his country. He has the most goals for a single Premier League club, the most away Premier League goals, the most Premier League goals in a calendar year and has scored against every Premier League opponent he has faced.

And that is just his Premier League records. He is the club’s record goalscorer in European competition and for England, he has scored the country’s most competitive goals, as well as goals in general, and is the joint-top scorer in major tournaments.

The list is endless.

However, the club and player now find themselves at a crossroads and letting Kane walk away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for free would be catastrophic.

For an academy to produce one of the world’s greatest strikers and not win a trophy with him or receive at least a sizeable fee for the player would be horrendous mismanagement. If reports are true, and Lewis wants a transfer or contract, he cannot be blamed.

Kane has been loyal to Tottenham for many years and now is the time to make a decision. By letting him go for free next year it will give him the power to move to a Premier League rival, which would only make his exit more painful.

If Kane says no to a contract now, and is willing to move to Bayern, the transfer needs to be sanctioned. It allows the player a move away to a club that isn’t a direct rival, gives the club money to reinvest and is simply the best of a bad situation.

Of course in an ideal world, Kane would retire at Tottenham. However, the risk of waiting to see if Kane will sign a new contract midway through next season is just not justifiable, not to mention the distractions it would cause to what Postecoglou is trying to build on the pitch.

Now is the time for a decision – a new contract, or a move away. Tick tock.
