Tottenham news: Ryan Mason exit update emerges as Swansea shortlist revealed

Tottenham coach Ryan Mason is among the names linked with the Swansea job as they’re eyeing a new manager.

The Englishman, who is in the frame for the Spurs job if Ange Postecoglou gets sacked, now has a potential suitor in the Championship.

The Championship club sacked Luke Williams on 17 February after a dismal run of form leaving them in relegation jeopardy.

Ryan Mason may part ways with Tottenham

If the 33-year-old wants to begin his managerial career and not wait for the job at Spurs, it may be time to take up a first-team role.

Given he’s got very little managerial experience, it’s no surprise that a Championship club is looking to take the punt on him.

Journalist Darren Witcoop reported on 17 February that Mason is on the shortlist at Swansea as they’re willing to take their time to find a replacement.

Des Buckingham and Rob Edwards, two out-of-work managers will also be considered by the Welsh club.

Witcoop wrote on X: “Swansea exploring their options and in no rush to make an appointment following Luke Williams’ exit. Tottenham No 2 Ryan Mason along with the out of work Des Buckingham and Rob Edwards among the head coaches who will be considered.”

Ryan Mason needs to prove he deserves to be the number one at Spurs

Mason should seriously consider the Swansea job as an opportunity to prove his managerial credentials beyond the interim role he’s been pigeonholed into at the North London club.

At Spurs, despite his commendable efforts, the assistant coach is seen as a temporary solution, with the club likely to pursue a high-profile manager should they part ways with Postecoglou.

To break this cycle and demonstrate his capability as a number one, Mason needs a platform where he can implement his vision from the start, manage through a full season and show tangible progress.

Swansea, known for nurturing young managers and playing attractive, possession-based football, aligns well with Mason’s philosophy.

The Championship offers a competitive yet less scrutinised environment than the Premier League, allowing him to experiment, learn and grow without the immediate pressure of top-flight results.

Success at Swansea could elevate his profile, proving to clubs like Tottenham that he’s not just an interim coach but a manager capable of leading a team to promotion or significant achievements.

This step could be the key to securing a permanent role at a higher level, including potentially at Spurs in the future.
