Tottenham may look to terminate Hugo Lloris contract – Rob Guest

Tottenham may look to terminate the contract of Hugo Lloris after he opted not to join Lazio, according to journalist Rob Guest.

The Football London writer suggested the France World Cup winner decided not to join the Serie A side as he would be a number two there and at the age of 36 will want to play.

Lloris has been back training with Tottenham, but Ange Postecoglou said the veteran goalkeeper – who has been at Spurs for 11 years – is unlikely to be included in their Premier League squad this term (Football London, 25 August).

Guest, speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast (25 August), hinted the club may now look to reach terms on his release.

“I think he’ll get his move, it’s just strange that it hasn’t happened so far,” Guest said in quotes reported by the Boot Room.

“There is a lot of talk about a transfer to Lazio but it seems that he’d be a number two, but given his age and his final years of his career, surely he just wants to be playing.

“A week to go – I wonder if it just gets to the stage where it’s like Serge Aurier and it’s just a mutual termination of the contract.

“He is one of the highest earners at the club, so you need to move him on, but because he’s been such a loyal servant you need to do it right and let him pick his club when the offers come in.”

The right thing to do

There is absolutely no doubting what a sensational servant to Tottenham Hugo Lloris has been.

But, clearly, the time is right for both sides to move on – especially given Lloris’ increasingly erratic form in recent times.

No goalkeeper registered more than the four errors that led to goals in the Premier League last term than Lloris, a theme they simply could not allow to continue this term.

Guglielmo Vicario is now the undisputed number one at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium too, and he put in a very impressive performance as Spurs defeated Manchester United 2-0 last weekend – with his saves preventing an expected goals rate of 1.46 (Sofascore).

Lloris earns a reported £100,000 per week at Tottenham (The Times, May 10), a figure that over the course of the season is going to add up to quite a significant amount to Tottenham.

Having Lloris knocking around is no good for the player, the club, or Postecoglou. Doing the honourable thing is the best step for all parties.
