Tottenham make official Djed Spence announcement

Djed Spence is enjoying a breakthrough campaign for Tottenham and his performances have been recognised by the Premier League.

Due to many different factors such as injuries and poor planning, Ange Postecoglou has been fighting an uphill battle throughout the 2024/25 season with Spurs currently sitting 13th in the Premier League.

Indeed, they still have the Europa League to fight for with their next game coming against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday but if they get knocked out from that, the pressure is sure to mount further on the beleaguered boss.

Having made the switch to North London a couple of years ago, Spence has only really started to come into his own this season with injuries the main reason why Postecoglou has chosen to start him as often as he has.

Spence gets recognition for Tottenham displays

If everyone at Tottenham had played to the level that Spence has this term, they’d be nowhere near the bottom half of the table.

Other players such as Archie Gray have also had standout seasons with the former Leeds United man often being dropped into centre-back to fill in the gaps.

Not only has Spence been solid defensively but he’s also contributed in attack with his work rate second to none.

So, as a result of his efforts throughout February, Tottenham have announced via X (6 March) that the defender has been nominated for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award.

Very few fans and pundits will disagree with his nomination for the award but he is up against some tough competitors such as Mohamed Salah and Beto who have had equally good months.

Postecoglou may have saved Tottenham millions

Even though Spurs’ injuries have been one of their major downfalls this term, it’s allowed Spence to break through and prove his worth.

Tottenham have notoriously struggled with their right-back since Kyle Walker exited for Manchester City all those years ago with the likes of Emerson Royal coming in and performing well below par.

Granted, they do have Pedro Porro among their ranks who’s a fairly solid defender but he has struggled for consistency.

Spence has filled in admirably on both sides of defence and, in the grand scheme of things, given he is still only 24 years old, there’s plenty of time for him to develop into an even better player than he already is.

Which could end up saving Spurs millions as they certainly won’t have to look at bringing in a new full-back any time soon.

There’s no knowing who’s going to come away with the Premier League’s award but if Spence is the one to receive it, he’s more than earned it.
