Tottenham ‘horrendous’ injury claim in ‘absolutely bizarre’ season – MOTD pundit

Tottenham have had an “absolutely bizarre” season so far, according to Danny Mills.

Discussing Spurs’ situation after their 2-1 loss against Newcastle on Saturday (4 January), Gary Lineker pointed out that they are 15 points worse off than they were after 20 Premier League games last season despite scoring the same amount of goals (42) and conceding just one more (30) in the same period.

Mills admitted that he is struggling to find an explanation for the same, but expressed some sort of sympathy towards Ange Postecoglou’s side, who he feels have had some “horrendous” injuries.

“I struggle [to explain the difference]”, Mills said on BBC Match of the Day (4 January).

“It’s been an absolutely bizarre season for them.

“They’ve had some horrendous injuries, they’ve had some wonderful performances, but they’ve come out on the wrong end of too many tight games.”

Micah Richards chimed in by saying that Tottenham have been unlucky.

He said: “A little bit unlucky as well, Danny, you have to say.

“They try playing football the right way, big injuries and, at times, they’ve been a little exposed at the back, but today [Saturday, 4 January], I thought they did alright.”

Ange Postecoglou under increasing pressure at Tottenham

The North London giants currently sit 12th in the Premier League after 20 games and are closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top four with 24 points on the board.

Postecoglou is, therefore, under increasing pressure at Spurs after promising to deliver a trophy this season.

Although that could still prove true as Tottenham prepare to face Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday (8 January), his job could be under threat if he does not at least qualify for a European competition.

It now remains to be seen if the Greek-Australian manager can turn things around in the second half of the season.

As Mills and Richards said, Spurs have been hit with a lot of injuries this season and they would need to make a few signings during the ongoing transfer window to cope with that.

They are already on the verge of making their first signing of the month, with a £12.5million deal for goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in place [The Independent].
