Teddy Sheringham claims Tottenham can now sign ‘the next Eric Cantona’

Tottenham are expected to be busy in this summer’s transfer window as they prepare for their return to the UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham will receive a huge financial injection as a result of qualifying for the Champions League, and fans will hope to see the majority of those funds spent on new players.

And former Spurs captain Teddy Sheringham has identified the player that the Lilywhites should do everything in their power to sign.

Sheringham urges Tottenham to sign Eberechi Eze

Sheringham believes that Tottenham should prioritise replacing Son Heung-min this summer.

Son is widely expected to be sold, and Sheringham believes that Spurs have already got their sights on a perfect replacement

In an interview with The Racing Tipster (25 June), the legendary striker said: “I think you’ve got to look at replacing Son. Maybe they’re already looking at Mathys Tel as being the man to do that, I don’t know. But they have already signed him and spent £30million on him.

“I think Eze is definitely one of those who would walk into Tottenham Hotspur and think ‘this is a proper place, I’m going to enjoy playing my football here’. I think he can shine the way Eric Cantona did when he went to Man United all those years ago.”

Those are big words from Sheringham. When Manchester United signed Cantona in 1992, that was the catalyst for the Red Devils to win their first league title in 26 years, plus three of the next four leagues.

The former England striker also mentioned Jurgen Klinsmann signing for Spurs as another example of a transfer that can transform a club.

Tottenham have been linked with a £68m move for Eze, although there is competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature.

Frank can be trusted in the transfer market

This is the first time that Frank is managing a club with aspirations to qualify for the Champions League every year.

It’s also likely to be the biggest transfer budget he has ever worked with in a summer window. However, the Dane should be trusted to recruit the right players to help Spurs climb the league table.

Frank has developed a system that works very well in the Premier League. He knows the league, and he’ll be aware of the players needed to implement his system at Spurs.

If he believes that Eze can thrive in North London, Tottenham should do everything in their power to sign him. If another playmaker is regarded as more suitable, Frank should be trusted to make that verdict.

Eze’s stats (2024/25)

Eze has a £68m release clause in his Palace contract, which would grant Spurs the right to discuss contract details with him. That’s a large fee, but it’s the going rate for a talented playmaker who is proven in the Premier League.

If Spurs get him, it would be a huge signal of their intent for the coming season.
