Son Heung-min sends message after Tottenham win v Eintracht Frankfurt

Tottenham pulled off their biggest victory of the season so far with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

The Lilywhites had to do so without the services of captain Son Heung-min, who missed out on the tie through injury.

Otherwise, Ange Postecoglou had a strong squad available to him that delivered away from home to keep the Australian in his job for the time being.

In a season that has been disastrous for Spurs, they will now head into the Europa League semi-finals.

Son sends message after Tottenham result

As Tottenham have slipped down the Premier League table, Son is one man who has had a season that has been well below his usual standards.

Nevertheless, his omission from the squad that travelled to Germany due to suffering from a foot injury would have been a blow to his side going into the tie.

That being said, his side coped well without their captain, with Dominic Solanke scoring the only goal of the game through a penalty kick, securing a 2-1 aggregate win.

Although he didn’t travel with his side, Son was quick to send a message of support to his teammates via his Instagram story (17 April), as he posted: “So so proud of you all. Well done. Let’s keep going.”

Tottenham face Bodo/Glimt in the final four of the Europa League, and the South Korean will be hoping to be available to push his side further towards silverware this season.

Tottenham show what they can do without Son

There have been plenty who have underperformed at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, although Son stands out given his role as captain, as well as the previous levels he has reached.

The Lilywhites may have progressed through to the next round of the Europa League, but there is no doubt that plenty of change is needed in north London during the summer transfer window.

The fact that the captain didn’t even travel with the squad does raise questions over whether there is something deeper going on behind the scenes, given the impact he could have had on the biggest night of the campaign so far.

Nevertheless, Spurs showed that they could cope just fine without Son in the side with Mathys Tel being started in the game while Solanke stepped up again despite having had a difficult season so far.

There is still plenty of speculation surrounding Postecoglou’s long-term future at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with some suggestions that even a trophy will not save him this season.

Therefore, whoever is at the helm will have a massive impact on what the future holds for Son.

As it stands, though, if the captain did depart, it definitely would not be as big of a loss as previously anticipated.
