Son Heung-min makes Jamie O’Hara eat his words after ‘terrific’ Tottenham moment

Son Heung-min has been nowhere near his best this season with the Tottenham captain often being slammed by fans due to his underperformance.

In general, Tottenham haven’t had all that much luck this term as a whole with the North London club currently sitting 12th in the table, 11 points adrift of the top-four spots.

Granted, things have got better over the last couple of weeks and the fact they’ve managed to beat Ipswich 4-1 in their game on Saturday means that things could finally be starting to fall in place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That is despite the fact Spurs’ fanbase have been calling for the head of Ange Postecoglou for several months in an underwhelming campaign.

While there have been times when the blame can be placed upon the head of the Australian, it feels like he’s been dealt a fairly bad hand when it comes to things such as injuries, so, he’ll no doubt be glad that his captain has managed to make Jamie O’Hara eat his words.

Jamie O’Hara slammed Son Heung-min after what he did at Tottenham

Son’s legacy at Tottenham will no doubt live on forever but up until his performance against Ipswich, it felt like the curtains could be drawing on his illustrious Premier League career.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport (13 February), O’Hara said the following about Son: “When you look at Tottenham’s two recent games — Liverpool and Aston Villa in the cup—this was the moment to show that they could compete.

“Unfortunately, they’ve shown the complete opposite. There’s no fight, no heart, no desire, and certainly no leadership.

“For me, that lack of leadership comes from the manager and the captain. I hate to say it, but Son Heung-min is not the right captain for this team anymore.

“He’s a fantastic player, an incredible servant to the club, but when it comes to pulling the team together in tough moments, he’s not the one to step up.

“A captain should be someone who can lead from the front, someone who can grab the team by the scruff of the neck and get the team out of a hole.

“Son isn’t that, it’s time to take the captaincy off him and give it to someone else.”

Son proves O’Hara wrong

Spurs’ win against Ipswich was largely inspired by the South Korea international as he assisted both of Brennan Johnson’s strikes thanks to his tricky wing-play.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man was showing signs of being back to his best and if his form can continue to this level until the end of the season, who’s to say that he won’t become the saviour they’ve desired.

In fact, while live on talkSPORT (23 February), Henry Winter shared his thoughts on Son’s performance and admitted he was wrong about the 32-year-old.

“What was really interesting, not so much a young player was Heung-min Son who I thought had been fading, didn’t look to be the player he was,” he said.

“He was helped by some poor defending but I thought he was terrific, certainly with the two goals he made for Johnson.”

There’s still time for Tottenham to turn their season around of course but due to the poor form they’ve been in since the start of the campaign, it’s unlikely that they’ll end up in the European places.

However, if they manage to go into the 2025/26 season with a few wins under their belt and a bit of momentum, it could be a rather interesting season for those in North London.

And who knows if they can triumph in the Europa League then Champions League football will be back on the table.
