‘Son Heung-min has played last game for Tottenham’ amid Frankfurt omission

Son Heung-min could be facing the exit door at Tottenham after being left out of the squad to face Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

The Lilywhites are preparing to travel to Germany on 17 April with the hope of earning a place in the final four of the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou’s side go into the clash level on aggregate after a Pedro Porro equaliser cancelled out Hugo Ekitike’s sixth-minute opener.

If the North Londoners are to win against the Bundesliga outfit, they will have to do so without their captain Son, who may have played his last game for the N17 club.

Son absent from Tottenham squad v Frankfurt

The South Korea international has had a hugely difficult campaign by his usual standards as Spurs have slumped down the Premier League.

It is fair to say the decrease in quality from the 32-year-old has played a role in that, which has sparked conversation around a potential exit.

Despite having just seven Premier League goals under his belt this season, there is no doubt that his addition could have been useful against Frankfurt.

The forward won’t get the chance to have an impact in Germany as Postecoglou has made the decision to leave him out of the squad due to injury.

Speaking in his press conference on 16 April, he said: “Son didn’t travel in the end, he’s the only one that misses out.

“He’s been battling with his foot problem for a few weeks now, he’s managed through it, but it got too painful over the last few days.

“He tried to train yesterday and just wasn’t right, so we made the decision to leave him out and allow him to recuperate and see the best way of recovery for him.”

This does beg the question of how bad the injury is and whether this has been done with the summer window in mind as much as anything else.

Son could be done at Tottenham

On a day when you need your best players to show their class but the Lilywhites’ number seven isn’t going to get the chance to do that.

Son has made 43 appearances in all competitions this season, but has now dropped out of arguably the most important one of the season.

This is baffling to many fans who are shocked that he would want to miss out, or the coaching staff wouldn’t want him to at least travel with the squad.

This could potentially point to some sort of falling out in the squad because there is no bigger game coming up for Spurs anytime soon.

As a result, the likes of Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel are likely to be utilised in what will be a huge ask for such young players.

Considering how much is on the line for Postecoglou from a personal point of view, it is a blow and could prove to be curtains for Son in a Tottenham shirt.
