Shearer shocked by what Postecoglou did post ‘dreadful’ Tottenham loss v Arsenal

Ange Postecoglou saying the first-half performance of Tottenham in their 2-1 loss against Arsenal was unacceptable was a “big surprise” to Alan Shearer.

Shearer was shocked that Spurs were underprepared to face the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday (15 January).

Having not been convinced by Postecoglou’s side and their “dreadful” run of form, the player-turned-pundit tipped Everton to hold them to a draw at Goodison Park on Sunday (19 January).

“This is a big game for both clubs”, Shearer wrote in his Betfair column (18 January).

“Everton are at home and they have to improve again They can’t have another home defeat.

“On the flip side of that, with Tottenham, they are on a dreadful run of form and I’m not convinced with them at all.

“I know they’ve got injuries with the centre-backs and the goalkeeper, but Postecoglou came out after their last game and said the first-half performance was not acceptable, which was a big surprise because going into a local derby against your biggest rivals and not being ready for it and up for it was somewhat surprising.

“I think both teams might take a point here.”

Draw v Everton may put Postecoglou in trouble at Tottenham

Postecoglou must avoid dropping points at Goodison Park at all costs as a bad result against relegation-battling Everton may leave Daniel Levy with a decision to make regarding his future.

Many believe the Greek-Australian tactician will have until the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool, which Spurs lead 1-0 after the first leg, at Anfield on 6 February to secure his future.

However, Postecoglou is in a precarious situation as Tottenham are placed 14th in the Premier League, sitting closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top four by points.

Therefore, the former Celtic manager is in dire need of a string of positive results as he battles to keep his place as the Spurs boss.

Everton succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa at Goodison Park on 15 January in David Moyes’ first game back in charge of them.

So, there is no reason why the North London giants cannot come away from Merseyside with all three points this weekend.
