Premier League make second announcement after Tottenham incident v Chelsea

Pape Matar Sarr was involved in a controversial incident as Tottenham lost to Chelsea in the Premier League on Thursday.

Ange Postecoglou’s team travelled to Stamford Bridge on 3 April, extending their winless streak in the English top flight to four matches.

Enzo Fernandez gave the hosts the lead in the 50th minute before another one of their goals was disallowed as the Premier League made an announcement after Moise Caicedo found the back of the net.

Sarr thought he had equalised for the Lilywhites at around the 70th-minute mark, but referee Craig Pawson was called to the monitor to have a look at an incident in the lead-up to the goal.

Sarr fouled Caicedo before Tottenham goal v Chelsea

VAR deemed Sarr fouled Caicedo in the build-up to Spurs’ disallowed goal, the Premier League says.

Jarred Gillet, who was at Stockley Park, recommended an on-field review and the 22-year-old Senegalese star’s strike was eventually overturned.

The midfielder was also penalised for his challenge on Caicedo as it was considered reckless.

In an official statement on X (3 April), the Premier League said: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal for Tottenham — and deemed there was a foul by Sarr on Caicedo in the build-up and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee then overturned the original decision and the goal was disallowed, with Sarr then cautioned for a reckless challenge.”

Postecoglou on brink of Spurs sack after Chelsea loss

Daniel Levy hasn’t been patient at Spurs over the years regarding sacking managers, and a decision regarding the current boss could potentially be on the horizon.

Postecoglou’s team lost to Fulham before the international break, and defeat at Stamford Bridge has only added to their misery.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Australian manager being relieved of his duties in the coming hours as the North Londoners sit 14th in the Premier League.

Tottenham have the Europa League to look forward to, but considering their recent displays, success in the European competition seems unlikely.

While the Lilywhites may feel hard done by the disallowed goal, Sarr clearly catches Caicedo with a high boot on his knees, leading to the former Brighton star losing possession.

Apart from the Senegalese midfielder’s strike, Spurs hardly created any chances and let the Blues dominate the proceedings for most of the game.

Fans will undoubtedly ask questions of Postecoglou regarding his tactics as they evidently aren’t working.

Despite the North London outfit’s best players returning from injury, they have continued to struggle, which isn’t a good look for the former Celtic boss.
