Premier League make official statement on Tottenham v Wolves controversy

The Premier League have released an official statement confirming that Tottenham were awarded a penalty against Wolves as a result of Andre making contact with Brennan Johnson.

Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw against Wolves on Sunday afternoon with a missed penalty from Son Heung-Min to rue.

Controversy ensued when Tottenham were awarded a first-half penalty although the Premier League have released a statement confirming the decision was checked and confirmed by VAR.

The statement, posted on the Premier League Match Centre X account, reads: “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Andre on Johnson was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was clear contact on the back of Johnson’s leg.”

Tottenham frailties exposed again v Wolves

Once again, Ange Postecgolou’s unwillingness to adapt his style of play cost Spurs a chance to pick up three points in their hurn for European qualification.

It feels like only a matter of time until Postecoglou leaves the club with his pre-match decision-making not doing him any favours having benched James Maddison.

While Wolves have had somewhat of a revival since the sacking of Gary O’Neil, it is still a fixture that Spurs should have been winning, especially at home and it personified the dull season they have endured.

The defeat leaves Spurs in 11th, 11 points outside of the Champions League qualification spots and fortunes do not appear to be changing anytime soon.

Whether any decision is made on the future of Postecoglou will await the coming days but he is certainly walking a tightrope and he can only have himself to blame for the season that looks unlikely to come to anything.
