Postecoglou sack: Tottenham manager decision to ‘reflect poorly’ on Levy

Tottenham wouldn’t have a definitive “upgrade” on Ange Postecoglou if Daniel Levy were to sack him this season, according to Phil McNulty.

The BBC chief reported via the BBC Sport website (28 January) that, at the moment there aren’t “many” suitable candidates to take over the hot seat at the London Stadium.

McNulty also added that if Levy were to relieve the Australian of his duties, having to “revert back” to Ryan Mason on an interim basis would be a “very poor reflection” on the choices he’s made.

“I can understand the current thinking of giving Postecoglou time, especially with the Carabao Cup semi-final coming at Liverpool, where Spurs have a 1-0 lead, then an FA Cup tie at Aston Villa,” he wrote.

“We do know, however, that Levy is not renowned for patience with his managers.

“One more point. Just saying “sack Ange Postecoglou” is the very easy part of this equation. If Spurs did sack Postecoglou, who is out there and realistically available who is a definite upgrade and would come to the club in its current situation?

“Not many. And the idea of Levy having to revert to Ryan Mason as a stop-gap for a third time would be a very poor reflection on his history of managerial decision-making.

“How Spurs support Postecoglou in the remaining days of this transfer window will be very interesting to observe.”

Ange Postecoglou seems safe at Tottenham for now

Against all the odds and all the losses that he has brought to Tottenham this season, it feels like Postecoglou is safe in his role.

Spurs are 15th in the Premier League table at the moment and may have an unprecedented amount of injuries but they should have still done much better than what they have this term.

At the moment, Postecolgou seems to be on thin ice but as McNulty pointed out, it’s unclear who’d come in and take over the role at Tottenham and be deemed as an ‘upgrade’ to fans.

It’s anyone’s guess what the rest of the season has in store but if Levy doesn’t rid himself of Postecoglou before the transfer window slams shut, he needs to be prepared to stick by the Australian until at least the end of the term.

Otherwise, he could end up looking rather foolish having to draft Mason back into his plans once again.
