Postecoglou sack: Harry Redknapp touted for shock Tottenham return this week

Ange Postecoglou is under tremendous pressure amid Tottenham’s alarming slump this season.

The North London outfit have had a season to forget under Postecoglou. Spurs are accustomed to aspire for European football, but this season they are battling in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Tottenham sit 13th in the Premier League with 34 points, level with another historically elite side in Manchester United. Postecoglou’s side are 15 points away from the top four and Champions League football for next season is a distant dream at this point.

The underwhelming performances under Postecoglou has seen the Australian’s position at the helm come under heavy scrutiny with shouts for Tottenham to sack their manager gaining momentum.

Terrible results for Tottenham under Postecoglou

Last season, Postecoglou got a lot of plaudits for installing an aggressive style of play at Spurs. Tottenham’s famous high backline attracted a lot of attention and became the talk of the town in the Premier League.

The Australian manager guided Spurs to a fifth-place finish in the league, as they missed out on Champions League football by just two points. It was expected that the North London club would bridge that gap and become a force to be reckoned with in Postecoglou’s second season.

However, the Lilywhites have instead nosedived into mediocrity as the former Celtic manager has failed to stop their slump.

Postecoglou’s poor decisions, coupled with massive drop in form from the players, have been the main reasons for Tottenham’s dismal run.

Postecoglou’s job is in danger and there have been shouts for his sacking. Talking to talkSPORT, Majestic has demanded for Postecoglou to be sacked and Harry Redknapp to be brought in.

He said: “Personally, tomorrow morning [I’d] get rid of him. Bring back Harry Redknapp for one last hurrah. I’d bring Harry back.

“The new manager bounce. Someone has got to just instil something in the team. Go, go on and play, you know you’re good.”

His partner during the show, Alan Pardew, suggested the name of Frank Lampard, who is revolutionising Coventry City, keeping them in the race for a Championship play-off spot. Majestic didn’t like the idea of Lampard.

He added: “Frank’s done very well but he does not like Tottenham and I am done with ex-Chelsea people at Tottenham.”

Can Postecoglou salvage Spurs’ season?

The Premier League is now a lost cause for the Lilywhites this season. They are expected to finish in the lower-half of the table and they are also out of the two domestic cup competitions.

The only saving grace for Spurs and Postecoglou could be the UEFA Europa League. If they manage to go to win it or at least make it to the final, the Australian manager has some chance of saving face and salvaging the season.

Sadly, Tottenham’s performances in the Europa League have been equally disappointing. The club stands at the exit door of the competition as they lost 1-0 to AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of the round of 16, leaving them with all the work to do in the second leg.

If Postecoglou’s side fail to overturn the one-goal deficit and win the tie, Spurs’ season could well be over and so will be the 59-year-old’s chances of remaining the manager at N17 next season.
