Postecoglou forces £32m player into Tottenham exile amid ‘strange situation’
Ange Postecoglou has exiled Sergio Reguilon from the Tottenham squad despite only having one recognised left-back, according to Marca.
The Spanish outlet reported on 22 November that he defender signed from Real Madrid for £32million [Sky Sports] ostracised from the Spurs squad after three spells away from North London.
This has been described as “a strange situation, to say the least” given that Destiny Udogie is the only recognised left-back at the club with Ben Davies representing a versatile option.
The 27-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with Brentford and hasn’t played a single game since returning to North London.
Ange Postecoglou forces Sergio Reguilon into Tottenham exile
The Spaniard hasn’t truly lived up to the expectations placed upon him when he signed for Spurs after a terrific spell with Sevilla in 2020.
His ability to get up and down the left-hand flank was a positive but his defensive frailties have come under fire across his spell in North London.
As a result, loan spells with Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford didn’t come as a surprise with the latter being his best spell away from Spurs.
There was hope for Reguilon that his performances for the Bees would impress Postecoglou enough to hand him a role in the Tottenham squad for the current season.

This hasn’t been the case with Udogie starting every Premier League game this season with Davies, Archie Gray, Micky Van de Ven and Djed Spence featuring at left-back in the League Cup and in Europe.
Given that £32m was spent on the defender in 2020, it would make sense to try and recoup some of that fee rather than exiling him from the squad entirely.
