Paul Merson was shocked by Tim Sherwood after he spoke about Tottenham trophy hopes live on Sky Sports on Saturday.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday (25 January, 1:46pm), Sherwood said that despite struggling in the Premier League, Spurs could have a dream season if they go all the way in the cup competitions.

Arguing that the Lilywhites are capable of winning the Carabao Cup, Sherwood acknowledged that their better chance of success would be the Europa League, giving them a path into the Champions League.

Sherwood said: "They can win the Carabao Cup – it is going to be difficult, [but] they are capable of doing it if they can win that second leg.

"With the likes of Newcastle in the final, as it looks at the moment, it looks very inviting for Tottenham.

"If they managed to win that, it'd be a successful season, but I think the competition that they can win, is the the Europa League. If they win that, it takes them to the Champions League.

"What a season that would be – if they qualify, win a trophy, they win the Carabao Cup, win the Europa League... I'm dreaming a little bit now."

"Oh, I thought you were drinking," Merson said.

Simon Thomas chimed in too: "I hope not, not on set anyway."

Tim Sherwood Tottenham claim leaves Sky studio in disbelief

Merson's sheer amazement at Sherwood's statement about a potential trophy haul for the Lilywhites is understandable, given the rate at which their form has plummeted across the last few weeks.

Although Spurs do hold the advantage over Liverpool going into the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final following a 1-0 win in North London, that might not count for much given their recent record.

Furthermore, they've not exactly been convincing on the continent either, only just edging a below-par Hoffenheim side 3-2 despite having taken a 2-0 lead to be cruising at half-time.

Sat 15th in the Premier League table thanks to a horror run of form brought on both by a spate of injuries and Postecoglou's high-octane style of play, 'game management' hasn't been in their vocabulary of late.

That's exactly what Spurs will need if they're to come through cup semi-finals and European knockout matches in the coming months, making Sherwood's prediction sound all the more deluded.
