Murphy baffled by Djed Spence after ‘ludicrous’ moment in Wolves v Tottenham

Danny Murphy has torn into Djed Spence after Tottenham fell to a 4-2 defeat against Wolves on Sunday.

Spurs continued their shocking Premier League form with a heavy defeat at Molineux on 13 April, where there were very few positives to take.

Goals from Mathys Tel and Richarllison weren’t enough to earn the Lilywhites any points in the Black Country after four sloppy goals were conceded.

It is fair to say that the defending was far from good enough at Molineux, with Murphy picking out Spence for his failings in particular.

Murphy slams Spence defending v Wolves

It is fair to say that the Englishman has been one of the surprise packages in North London and one of the most consistent performers under Ange Postecoglou.

The 24-year-old has been such a positive performer that calls for an England call-up aren’t far-fetched, as he was unlucky to miss out on Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

With that being said, Spence didn’t have his greatest day against the Old Gold, as he scored an unfortunate own goal after Guglielmo Vicario pushed the ball against him.

Although that wasn’t his fault, the defender was at fault for Wolves’ third goal as Jorgen Stand Larsen gave his side a 3-1 lead at Molineux.

It is fair to say this didn’t go down well with Murphy on Match of the Day 2, as he picked up on the ex-Rennes loanee’s lapse in defending.

He said: “It’s never just the same player, it’s a mentality that’s wrong in their defending, professionalism and their organisation. That’s another ludicrous goal, he’s let him go Djed Spence, that was poor defending.”

Spence undeserving of criticism at Tottenham

There has been so much good about the versatile full-back in such a generally poor Tottenham season that he doesn’t deserve to be slandered too much at Wolves.

It is certainly unfortunate that he and Lucas Bergvall were at fault in the West Midlands despite having positive individual campaigns.

The defeat against the Old Gold summed up the failures of Postecoglou, who is failing to get the best out of his side.

It is further proof that this is only getting worse as even the top performers are starting to struggle for the Lilywhites as the season heads towards its end date.
