Mike Dean instantly reacts to Tottenham v Newcastle United controversy

Mike Dean believes the correct decision was made not to disallow Anthony Gordon’s goal during Tottenham versus Newcastle United on Saturday.

Spurs attempted to play out from the back as Brandon Austin rolled the ball out, leaving Lucas Bergvall to mop up a loose pass, which Joelinton closed down and Gordon scored on 4 January.

With Ange Postecoglou’s taking the lead through Dominic Solanke just two minutes earlier, the Lilywhites were furious after Joelinton’s block came off a hand, but VAR did not rule the goal out.

Speaking live via Sky Sports News [4 January, 12:37pm], Clinton Morrison said: “They do want a handball so VAR will have a look at it.

“Bergvall is saying it’ll be disallowed because he’s played the ball and it’s hit Joelinton’s hand,” to which Dean said: “It’s a goal, even if it has hit his hand. It’s accidental and Joelinton hasn’t scored so it’s a goal.”

Tottenham v Newcastle United shrouded by VAR controversy

Postecoglou will have been absolutely fuming to see his team concede just two minutes after taking the lead through Solanke, finishing off a beautiful cross from Pedro Porro.

Scoring goals is clearly not the issue for the Lilywhites, with only Liverpool boasting more in the Premier League this season, but shipping goals could end up with the manager being sacked if the current trend continues.

Postecoglou is under immense pressure, with Spurs unable to take three points from their last three games heading into Saturday’s clash, but he can hardly be blamed.

Spurs are currently without Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies and Guglielmo Vicario, all of whom would go straight into the starting XI.

Daniel Levy is being urged to splash the cash now that the transfer window is open for the next few weeks, but with the owner rarely investing enough on the pitch, it could just be wishful thinking.
