Merson in total disbelief at Postecoglou sack news at Tottenham – ‘Disgrace’

Paul Merson cannot believe the news that has emerged from Tottenham in regard to the future of Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham return to Europa League action tonight, and a failure to win the game would see that dark shadow of concern widen over North London.

After what has been a dismal domestic campaign for Tottenham, they have been left praying for Europa League success, not only to win a trophy, but to secure European football for the next campaign.

A failure to do that would be massively detrimental to Tottenham and everyone involved with the club, making it even harder for them to bounce back anytime soon.

Postecoglou sack update emerges ahead of Frankfurt clash

Postecoglou will be sacked if Tottenham fail to win the Europa League, and there will be very few people capable of making an argument against that.

However, the Tottenham boss could face the sack even if they do win the competition, and Merson is disgusted by the thought of that.

Speaking via Sky Sports News (10 April, 20:27am), he said: “If Tottenham don’t [win], I don’t see Ange being there next season.

Postecoglou has a horrid record since he was appointed as Tottenham manager.

“It’d be a joke if he isn’t [still at Tottenham if they win it]. A disgrace. If he wins the trophy and they sack him, that’d be an absolute joke. They’ve got a short memory, Tottenham fans. They haven’t won anything in a long time. He’d have won a trophy and taken them into the Champions League.”

The one thing that seems clear is that any hopes of Pstecoglou keeping his job solely hinge on Spurs’ ability to win the trophy, which would be their first in 17 years, though that may not even be enough to get the overwhelming majority of supporters back on his side.

Tottenham need to win against Frankfurt

A defeat in the first leg wouldn’t be the end of the world, but it would ramp up the pressure to unseen levels on Postecoglou for the return fixture.

The Australian has ran out of excuses, and with the majority of his squad back, the injury situation cannot be used to deflect from what has been a wretched campaign.

Given the relationship with supporters, it’s hard to see any way back for Postecoglou regardless of what he does or doesn’t achieve over the next few weeks.

With that said, the pressure will just as much be on Daniel Levy to showcase where his true ambition lies for Tottenham.
