Marco Silva speaks out on Tottenham job after Postecoglou sack news

Marco Silva has been strongly linked with the managerial job at Tottenham Hotspur as pressure mounts on Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs have had a terrible season that has seen them struggle in the Premier League. The North London outfit are nowhere near the Champions League places, sitting 14th with 34 points.

Before the international break, Spurs lost 2-0 against Fulham, increasing pressure on the Australian as calls for a sack have been gaining momentum.

It is said that defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League next month could spell the end for Postecoglou.

Possible replacements for Postecoglou at Tottenham

The 57-year-old has lost 15 games in the Premier League, and the doors to European football through the Premier League are almost closed.

With Postecoglou’s job under heavy scrutiny, several managers have already been linked with the gig at N17.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has done a fantastic job with the Cherries and is one of the favourites to take over at Tottenham in the event of Postecoglou’s sacking.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has publicly admitted that he is open to a Tottenham return.

Silva is one of the strong candidates linked with the role, sitting on a three-man shortlist for Daniel Levy.

On Tuesday, the Fulham boss was present at the National Association of Football Coaches (ANTF) and was asked about being linked with other clubs.

He said via The Standard: “It is a natural situation when the objectives are achieved with good results.

“When the team plays in a way that recognises quality and that has clearly evolved for players, for the club itself.”

Europa League progress will decide Postecoglou’s fate

Despite an unconvincing fashion, Spurs managed to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League by beating AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate.

Tottenham chairman Levy has given an ultimatum to Postecoglou that European football is the minimum goal for next season. To achieve that, Spurs’ only shot is winning the Europa League, as they are highly unlikely to qualify via the Premier League.

If Postecoglou manages to guide Spurs to a Europa League victory, he might just be able to save his job as he would end Tottenham’s 17-year trophy draught in the process.
