Liverpool v Tottenham: Crushing injury news emerges before Carabao Cup clash

Arne Slot has confirmed that Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to play against Tottenham in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Thursday.

The Lilywhites hold a 1-0 advantage heading into the EFL Cup semi-final second-leg at Anfield on 6 February.

Spurs have been handed a major boost after the Reds star was replaced in the 70th minute of the 2-0 victory over Bournemouth but it is a crushing injury blow for Liverpool.

Speaking after the contest, in quotes reported by the club’s official website (1 February), Slot said: “He felt something, I can’t tell you exactly what and how bad it is of course because we are one hour after the game, but it is never a good sign if a player is asking for a substitution.

“This is not a fact but I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday, but let’s hope he is back with us as soon as possible.”

Alexander-Arnold absence is a huge boost for Tottenham

The England international is regarded as one of world football’s best players when it comes to his abilities on the ball.

While his defensive acumen has come under scrutiny, he is arguably the Reds’ most creative outlet and he will be a huge miss for Slot’s side if he is ruled out.

The Lilywhites have the opportunity to reach the final and win the first trophy since they won the EFL Cup in 2008.

Ange Postecoglou has been under severe pressure after a run of just one win in 11 Premier League matches but a cup win would turn his fortunes around.

If his side can maintain the lead against the Merseysiders they will be on the verge of securing a trophy in his second season in charge.

If they manage to do so, the Australian will surely be safe in his job regardless of the club’s dismal league position.

In other Tottenham news, Radu Dragusin could be ruled out for up to six months in a new Spurs injury blow.
