Jamie Carragher sends Ange Postecoglou message as Tottenham make sack decision
Jamie Carragher has told Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou what he needs to do in order to get things right.
Spurs have made their decision on his sack and have opted to keep him at the club for the time being, according to the Mirror on 28 December.
The Australian’s position at the club has been questioned after their 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day and also a 2-2 draw against Wolves on 29 December.
Carragher wrote on X: “I’ve never asked Ange to change his ‘idea’ or system, which is full backs inside & lots of rotation. Pressing high & getting the ball back in play quickly. I think he should tweak at times in game. I think Amorim should do the same on Sunday. Every manager has his way, there’s no point asking them to rip the whole thing up as you might as well get a manager whose idea is that in the first place.”
Ange Postecoglou needs to quickly turn things around at Tottenham
Carragher’s advice to Postecoglou about making tactical tweaks is spot on because it addresses the need for adaptability in the game.
Despite the Australian’s clear philosophy of full-back inversion, high pressing and quick ball recovery via the counter-press, the results indicate that his approach isn’t yielding consistent success.
After a season and a half, if Tottenham are still struggling to execute the manager’s tactics effectively, this reflects on both Postecoglou’s ability to adapt his strategy to the team’s strengths and weaknesses and the players’ ability to adapt to his system.
Carragher’s point about tweaking during matches rather than overhauling the entire system is pragmatic; it suggests maintaining the core philosophy but being flexible enough to adjust to game situations.

This approach could potentially unlock better performances from a squad that’s capable of much more than what they’ve shown under Postecoglou’s current framework.
