Jamie Carragher raves about ‘sensational’ Gugliemo Vicario after Tottenham loss v Chelsea

Jamie Carragher was blown away by Guglielmo Vicario’s performance for Tottenham in their loss against Chelsea despite the goalkeeper conceding four times.

Spurs’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an abrupt end at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night (6 November) as Ange Postecoglou’s side was rocked by two first-half injuries, had two players sent off and, ultimately, suffered a 4-1 defeat.

However, amid all the controversy, disallowed goals and talk of VAR, Carragher decided to offer some special praise for Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario, who impressed despite how many times he had to pick the ball up out of his net at The Lane.

“I must say, the goalkeeper was absolutely sensational,” Carragher said on Sky Sports Main Event on Monday night (6 November), as transcribed by The Express: “You talk about the sweeper keeper, I have never seen anything like that.

“He’s been a revelation since he has come to Tottenham, and you couldn’t help it at some stage that you were almost willing Tottenham on with nine men to try and hang on and maybe nick something at the end.”

The ex-Empoli shot-stopper pulled off impressive saves to deny Nicolas Jackson several times, as well as a stunning block to deny Marc Cucurella from adding to Spurs’ woes late on.

Ex-Spurs right-back Alan Hutton told Tottenham News:

“I’ve seen he’s come up with some big saves at big times,” Hutton said.

As a goalkeeper, there are going to be times where I wouldn’t say ‘nervous’, but you’re going to go through a little spell where it’s not spot on.

I think overall he can be happy with his performances since he’s come to the club.

It’s a huge club. I mean, playing in a massive stadium they’ll be expecting silverware and challenging other big teams.

There’s pressure there, taking over from Hugo Lloris, who was the captain, in goals.

There’s always going to be that little bit of pressure for Vicario but for me, I think he’s handled it well.

In other Tottenham news, the goals are starting to dry up for the Spurs Women team.
