James Maddison ‘pathetic’ after what happened in Tottenham v Manchester United

James Maddison has become the talk of the town at Tottenham after what happened in the recent encounter with Manchester United.

Tottenham secured all three points against Manchester United, with Maddison scoring the only goal of the game on his return to the lineup.

Criticism of the midfielder has been relentless over the last few months, with Maddison keen to silence his doubters as shown by his celebration after the goal.

His celebration was in response to comments made earlier in the week by Roy Keane, but also to many other pundits who have all but written Maddison off.

However, it’s fair to say it has done his reputation no good.

Rory Jennings slams James Maddison for celebration v Man United

Maddison‘s antics after scoring what would prove to be the only goal of the game certainly didn’t go unnoticed, and if anything, it has increased the amount of attention on the English international.

Prior to now, the main focus of conversation at Spurs had been on the future of Ange Postecoglou, but that has changed now with Maddison being criticised yet again for his attitude.

Jennings, speaking via talkSPORT (17 February), said: “It was pathetic. You don’t have the right to be shushing anybody when your team is sitting 12th. You don’t have the right to shush anybody when you have been abject for basically a season.

“You score one goal, a tap in from two yards against the worst Manchester United team of my lifetime and suddenly your putting your fingers in your ears, cancelling out the haters as if you’re Kim Kardashian.

“James Maddison, why are your team in 12th? If you’re such a good footballer, how average are you actually for you to have your team in 12th?”

Maddison simply undeserving of such criticism

Tottenham are enduring a horrid campaign, there’s no hiding away from that, but the frustration and anger that comes from that needs to be aimed at the right people.

Maddison simply isn’t the right person to be upset with. If we are now at a stage where footballers are expected to act like robots, the sport may as well be curtailed.

Just as pundits or fans are within their right to criticise players, those on the pitch are also within their right to have their own little dig back. Not everything needs to be made a case of.

Maddison has played his role in this campaign, if others had done the same, Tottenham simply wouldn’t be in the mess that they currently find themselves in.

Frustration is more than warranted, but Maddison simply doesn’t deserve to be facing the brunt of that.
