James Maddison mocked by Tamworth fans as he arrives for Tottenham FA Cup clash
James Maddison was mercilessly mocked by Tamworth supporters as he arrived for the FA Cup third round tie with Tottenham, according to Ollie Holt.
The MailOnline chief football writer posted on X (12 January) showing an image of Maddison’s arrival at the humble surroundings of The Lamb Ground, not far from where he grew up in Coventry.
As he and his Spurs teammates walked through the stadium gates for a tie they simply must win, Tamworth fans chanted “Who are ya?!”, to ensure the pantomime welcome associated with FA Cup ties such as these.
Holt shared: “‘Who are ya?’ some of the Tamworth fans sing as James Maddison and his teammates arrive.”
Tottenham simply must avoid Tamworth banana skin
If Tottenham make hard work of the contest against Tamworth, it will be a horrendous look for Ange Postecoglou, Daniel Levy and the club.
It has already been a turbulent season for Spurs in the Premier League, marooned in the bottom half of the table while past the midway point in the campaign, and with January transfer pressure already high.
While on paper this tie against non-league opponents is a formality, the FA Cup has thrown up similar giant-killings in the past which for Tottenham fans would be unimaginable.
Postecoglou’s position would potentially be untenable with a defeat to their fifth-tier opponents, and it appears little risk will be taken with Maddison captaining a strong line-up in the West Midlands.
Three days later comes the North London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates – but Spurs want to take absolutely no chances in a cup competition they will fancy a run in.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs are credited with an interest in a former Aston Villa midfielder now in Serie A.
