Guglielmo Vicario ‘every bit as important’ to Tottenham as James Maddison – journalist

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is “every bit as important” to the club’s strong start to the new season as James Maddison.

That is according to Daily Mail journalist Tum Balogun after the goalkeeper made several “stunning” saves against Chelsea.

Tottenham lost 4-1 to their London rivals on Monday (6 November), having had both Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie sent off.

Naming Vicario in his power rankings, Balogun wrote for the Daily Mail (7 November): “The 27-year-old completed seven run-outs against the Blues and all were successful.

“He also made three stunning saves, was a whisker away from stopping Palmer’s penalty and finished with a touch map reminiscent of a central defensive midfielder rather than [a] goalkeeper.

“The former Empoli star has seamlessly addressed the club’s issues in the position after a few shaky seasons with Hugo Lloris and he appears to be every bit as important to their great start as James Maddison, Yves Bissouma or Micky van de Ven.”

Ex-Spurs right-back Alan Hutton told Tottenham News:

“He was brilliant. I think he’s kind of flown under the radar ever so slightly since joining the club,” Hutton said. “I think there were one or two question marks from some people at the start of the season, but I think he’s really grown in stature.

“Some of his saves were outstanding, his timing to leave his line and come out and close down. And he knows he is going to have to do that.

“With playing a high line there are going to be times when the ball is going to go beyond the defence, so he is going to have to read it and come out.

“I thought he was excellent at it, some really good saves. He kept the goal number down in certain situations, so I thought he was outstanding.

“Especially after Lloris, he had big gloves to fill. He has come in and really hit the ground running, so I think that’s a really good bit of business from Tottenham.”

In other Tottenham news, one player has admitted to “bad tackles” after the club’s defeat to Chelsea.
