Ex-Spurs Scout: Tottenham ace Rodrigo Bentancur will ‘come back stronger’ after latest setback
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent six years as a senior scout at Spurs and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent eight years on Everton’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King backs Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur to “come back stronger” from his latest injury setback which will come as a “massive psychological blow” for the midfielder.
Bentancur was making his first start in almost nine months for Tottenham against Aston Villa on Sunday 26 November, but with just half an hour on the clock he was taken out by Matty Cash and forced off injured.
The nature of the injury was unclear at first but on Tuesday 28 November, Spurs’ worst fears were released when it was reported, as per Fabrizio Romano via X, that the Uruguay international was set for another two and a half months on the sidelines.
King has spoken to Tottenham News about the nature of Bentancur’s injury and just how much of an impact it will have on the midfielder.
“It is absolutely awful news,” said King. “It has been a long time since I retired but I remember having an injury like he had, so I know how hard he has had to work to get himself back to fitness and back into the team.
“For half an hour against Aston Villa, he looked a very classy individual and I was so pleased for him, but in the end, a wreckless five seconds of play now means he has to work for another three months to get back into the team again.
“There was no need for the tackle and it is now going to be very difficult for Bentancur, it is just horrendous.
“However, I think if he can get back from the first injury he had, then he will be just fine with this one. He seems like a good professional to me and I wish him well because this will be another long road ahead for him.
“They say these things happen in threes in football, and if this is his first two injuries who knows what the third one will be.

“You’re always cautious when you have been injured, it is that first tackle, pass, run, stop, turn and twist, all of those things are going through your head, but he looked as though he was through that phase and now he is back to square one.
“Luckily this injury isn’t as bad as the first one he had, but it is still enough to put him out for eight or nine weeks which for Tottenham is a huge blow and for him, it will be a huge psychological blow.
“He will be thinking when is this going to end, am I finished? All of these things will be going through his head but I back him to come back stronger from this.”
