Everton v Tottenham: Son targetted by fans at Goodison after injury incident

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min was booed by Everton fans at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou would have been furious to see the Toffees race into a 2-0 lead with the Australian expected to be sacked should Spurs fail to win the Premier League clash on 19 January.

The Spurs boss made a brave decision to start Pedro Porro after the defender’s most recent performance. However, in fairness to the Spaniard, he couldn’t do much about either goal.

Son made a slow start on Merseyside, missing a clear-cut opening, and was perhaps impacted by the treatment he received from the home support.

As per Phil McNulty via BBC Sport (19 January), “Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son getting the treatment from Everton fans as he goes to take a corner.

“Clearly, many have not forgotten or forgiven him for a challenge with Everton’s Andre Gomes here in November 2019, which resulted in the Portuguese midfielder sustaining a serious injury.”

Everton supporters’ treatment of Son feels particularly harsh.

While he was involved in a challenge which led to Gomes breaking his leg, it certainly wasn’t intentional. In addition, the South Korean is generally known as one of the nicest guys in football.

Therefore, it is quite surprising that all these years later he is still on the receiving end of some particularly harsh treatment from the Goodison faithful.

However, that won’t be of any concern to Postecoglou. What will be of concern is the fact that his side are 2-0 down in a game which could have a big impact on his future at the club.

Some will have sympathy for Postecoglou, who has seen an unprecedented number of first-team players ruled out with injury in recent months – with Dominic Solanke the latest to suffer a crushing injury blow [via Paul O Keefe, 18 January].

However, football is a result business, and it feels as though Postecoglou might be running out od excuses.
