Everton make approach to sign ex-Tottenham ace Pochettino dubbed ‘the new Messi’
Everton have inquired for the signing of former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards, according to Jacque Talbot.
The journalist, who has featured for The Guardian, reported via his personal X account [21 January] that the Toffees are interested in the 26-year-old who has not been at Spurs since 2019.
Edwards has experienced an unusual career since leaving North London for Vitor de Guimaraes, a team in Portugal where he scored 20 goals in 95 appearances.
While he has impressed further since moving to Sporting in January 2022, notching 24 goals and 26 assists in 120 appearances alongside Viktor Gyokeres, he has not lived up to expectations.
That is because, in 2016, Mauricio Pochettino said [Sky Sports]: “The qualities – it’s only looks, his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi.”
As a 17-year-old, fresh out of Tottenham’s academy, the comparison was clearly too much for the youngster to handle, with his career pretty much taking a disappointing nosedive since.
Everton want to sign former Tottenham academy gem
Saying this, he would certainly be a good addition to David Moyes’ squad at Goodison Park, with the Toffees hoping to avoid relegation to the Championship.
While he only made one senior appearance for the Lilywhites, Edwards chose to take a chance in Europe, where he has made multiple appearances in the Champions League and Europa League.
It would be quite the reunion to see the 26-year-old come back to the Premier League after nearly six years away, and it would be interesting to see how he fares back in England.
Anyone being compared to the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale is likely to buckle under the pressure, so Spurs fans are probably eager for his comeback.
