Danny Murphy names only thing that can prevent complete Tottenham failure

Danny Murphy has named the one thing that Tottenham need to achieve this season, labelling them as a failure otherwise.

The Lilywhites have had a difficult season and sitting 13th in the Premier League table is well below what would have been expected of them.

The struggles in North London this term has led to plenty of questions being asked of manager Ange Postecoglou and whether he is the man who can guide Spurs to success.

Murphy casts Europa League verdict

With the Premier League season written off, the pressure was on Tottenham to deliver in cup competitions this season.

However, a defeat against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final and a loss against Aston Villa in the FA Cup dumped the Lilywhites out of contention for a domestic trophy.

This means that Spurs have to put their efforts into the Europa League this season if they are going to reach the end of the campaign with anything to show for it.

Given that Postecoglou has spoken about his ability to win trophies in his second season with clubs, this has certainly only added to the pressure already on his shoulders.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (26 February, 12:26pm), Murphy added to that as he delivered a blunt verdict, saying: “Spurs have got to win the Europa League otherwise the season is a complete failure.”

Ange Postecoglou might need Tottenham trophy to save his job

Postecoglou has been vocal about the impact that injuries have had on his side throughout the season so far and you can certainly feel some sympathy for him in this respect.

However, that excuse can not cover the entirety of Tottenham’s performances this season and as a result, it’s not surprising that there have been questions over the Australian’s future.

The boss has shown he is not willing to adapt his style of play to suit the players that he has available to him and undoubtedly, that has caused several defeats for Spurs this season.

Although their Premier League form may have turned a corner with three wins from their last three games, there were suggestions earlier in the season that remaining in the Europa League was the only thing saving Postecoglou from the sack.

With that in mind, the boss will surely know it’s vital to come away with a trophy this season, proving that it has not been a write-off and he can push on with his side domestically.

Tottenham’s mission starts with a trip to AZ Alkmaar on 6 March as supporters in North London hope to see their side putting all of their efforts into victory in Europe.
