Daniel Levy blamed as Postecoglou in ‘maddening’ Tottenham contradiction
Daniel Levy is to blame for Ange Postecoglou throwing Timo Werner under the bus at Tottenham, according to Riath Al-Samarrai.
The Daily Mail journalist dubbed Spurs as a “maddening” club after Postecoglou ripped Werner to shreds for his poor performance in the 1-1 draw against Rangers on Thursday (12 December) despite saying he would not criticise one of his players in public.
He, though, sympathised with Cristian Romero after the defender appeared to aim a dig at Levy, who he feels lacks an appetite for adventure.
“Tottenham can be a maddening club and Ange Postecoglou has had a maddening week”, Al-Samarrai wrote in The Mail on Sunday (15 December, page 85).
“Barely 24 hours after saying he would never criticise a player in public, he launched Timo Werner under a bus.
“He wasn’t wrong – Werner’s performance against Rangers was dire and hardly isolated. But it was risky and it wasn’t necessarily the right target.
“That was hit far more cleanly, and to far greater risk, by Cristian Romero in questioning the man upstairs.
“If Daniel Levy conducted his duties with a greater appetite for adventure, Postecoglou would never be forced to rely on loan signings best known here for failing at Chelsea.”
Daniel Levy blamed amid Ange Postecoglou contradiction at Tottenham
There was a sense of optimism at Tottenham after they thrashed reigning champions Manchester City 4-0 in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on 23 November.
However, things have since gone downhill in North London, with Spurs failing to win each of their last five games across all competitions.
Therefore, Postecoglou, who vowed to deliver a trophy as he did in his second season at his previous clubs [Sky Sports], is under immense pressure.
Levy, meanwhile, is always under the spotlight at Tottenham for one reason or the other.
While it is not a surprise to see the chairman get called out, it is perhaps harsh to criticise him for Werner’s signing.

The Germany international impressed after joining Postecoglou’s side on an initial six-month loan last January, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 13 Premier League appearances last season.
However, he has managed only three assists in 12 league games this season and it would not be a surprise to see Spurs enter the market for a new attacker in the January transfer window again.
