Carragher blasted over Tottenham claim, Postecoglou under ‘serious’ pressure
Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou have come under fire in recent weeks but maybe Jamie Carragher went a step too far.
The Lilywhites fell to one of their lowest points of the season on Thursday (6 February), losing 4-0 against Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final.
This destroyed any expectation of reaching a first cup final since 2021 despite going into the second leg already 1-0 up on aggregate.
After the game, various Spurs players were slammed by the media with Postecoglou facing the brunt of the criticism, but some of that went too far.
Jamie Carragher slammed after Tottenham v Liverpool criticism
There was plenty wrong with Spurs’ performance at Anfield which made it easy for Arne Slot’s side to secure a victory on the night.
This can be partially blamed on the injury list in N17 which has been lengthy and full of first-team stars all season long.
This factor wasn’t wasted on Andy Dunn who has stood up for the Australian head coach after comments were aimed at him by Jamie Redknapp and Carragher.
In his column for the Sunday Mirror on 9 February (page 67), he said: “Ange Postecoglou is under serious pressure and Spurs’ performance at Anfield on Thursday night was very underwhelming.

“But the criticism from Jamie Redknapp and Jamie Carragher was still quite harsh. Carragher said Accrington gave Liverpool a better game and Redknapp called Tottenham ‘horrendous’ and ‘abject’.
“They were not great, but their injury list is long and they were playing opponents who have a wealth of options and are seriously good. Ange still needs to be handed a bit of slack.”
Ange Postecoglou got it wrong for Tottenham v Liverpool
It has to be said, that regardless of fitness concerns, there was enough quality on the pitch for Spurs to put in a much better performance.
The likes of Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski had little to no forward impact despite the quality and experience they possess.
A similar story can be said about Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur in the Tottenham midfield who both were poor and put little confidence in the youngsters around them.
This partly has to be blamed on Postecoglou who has once again failed to get the most out of the players who are at his disposal.
There are elements that can be blamed on factors out of the Australian’s approach and arguably comments made by Redknapp and Carragher were too much but it has to be said that Spurs were very poor at Anfield.
