Bale says if Tottenham will now sack Postecoglou straight after Europa League win

Tottenham have won the Europa League but the drama is far from fizzling out in North London.

Ange Postecoglou has delivered what he promised: a trophy in his second season in the dug-out.

However, a terrible Premier League campaign in which Spurs could finish in 17th – just one place above the relegation zone – means he could still be dead and buried as the North London club’s manager.

Daniel Levy now has Postecoglou sack decision to make

Gareth Bale was on punditry duty as Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

The ex-Spurs star thinks that the decision now lies at the feet of Daniel Levy on whether or not to sack Postecoglou after winning the club’s first major trophy since their League Cup win in 2008.

“Only the chairman can decide that, to be honest,” said Bale on TNT Sports 1 after the game on 21 May.

“There’s been so much talk about whether he goes, or whether he doesn’t.

“It’ll be interesting to see now because he’s won a trophy. He’s the first Tottenham manager to do so in a long time, so I guess the board has some decisions to make. They’ve got to back him or they don’t, and they’ve got to do it soon.

“I like the football he plays.

“He lacks a Plan B but tonight shows that there is a different side to how he can play.

“I guess, as a manager, he’s matured, and he can bring that defensive side to his teams.

“He can still have a great success here.”

Who could be the next Tottenham manager?

Spurs have been linked with a lot of managers in recent months.

Postecoglou might not go anywhere but it would take a deluded Tottenham fan to think that his job in North London is 100 per cent safe after winning the Europa League.

Before the game, TNT Sports spoke to a Spurs fan who said that the damage has been done in the league. And that’s correct, to a degree.

TeamEuropa Leagues won

Only Sevilla have won more Europa League/UEFA Cup titles than Tottenham.

If Spurs give him the chance to stay on, they’ll be in the Champions League and could be rubbish in the Premier League again, meaning no European football the season after.

Daniel Levy won’t stand for that.

As it stands, BetVictor have Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez as 4/1 joint-favourites to be the new Tottenham manager if Postecoglou goes.
