Ange Postecoglou delivers one-word verdict on Tottenham season

Ange Postecoglou delivered Tottenham a first trophy in 17 years by defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Despite that achievement, the Australian’s job is under threat due to the North London side’s woeful form in the Premier League.

The final day of the Premier League season summed up Spurs, with the Lilywhites suffering a 4-1 defeat at home to Brighton.

While being interviewed after the game, Postecoglou summed up Tottenham’s whirlwind of a campaign.

Postecoglou praises Tottenham season

There was a party atmosphere inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with tens of thousands of flags waving above beaming smiles.

When Spurs took the lead through a Dominic Solanke penalty, it seemed Postecoglou’s men were on course for a rare Premier League victory.

However, everything unravelled just like Tottenham’s season as Brighton ran rampant in North London.

While the Lilywhites had nothing to play for, the result meant that they suffered their most defeats ever in a single season.

Tottenham lost more games in a season than ever before

This is why Postecoglou could still be given the boot this summer despite guiding his side to a famous trophy.

After the game, the former Celtic manager was asked the usual questions about his future, but then he was rather taken aback.

During an interview with BBC Sport on Match of the Day (25 May, 58m 16s), he was asked to assess Spurs’ season in one word.

Postecoglou said: “Outstanding.”

The 59-year-old then went on to reference Tottenham’s trophy triumph before speaking about the supporters.

He said: “Ask anyone at this football club at the start of the year whether they’d take that; I’m pretty sure there wouldn’t be a person in the house who wouldn’t.”

Postecoglou should be given another chance

Spurs have certainly endured a torrid Premier League season; there is no denying that.

However, how could you possibly sack somebody who has delivered on the promise of a trophy and Champions League football?

Yes, Postecoglou has significant work to do if he is to change the North London club’s fortunes, but he has a summer ahead of him to do that.

Tottenham already possess several quality players, but will need to strengthen in key areas, the midfield being one of those.

Furthermore, the Australian must reconsider his approach as his side have been too predictable for more than a season.

However, Postecoglou deserves the opportunity to rebuild, after all, he won a trophy in his second season.
