Alan Sugar explodes at Sol Campbell ‘Rubbish’ on Tottenham after brand new £5m reveal

Sol Campbell is a controversial figure among Tottenham supporters after his exit to Arsenal in 2001.

Nowadays, there is very little to shout home about given the dismal season that Tottenham are enduring, though Spurs were in the headlines for very different reasons over 20 years ago.

Campbell – who spent a remarkable nine years representing the famous white of Tottenham – departed the club in 2001, to join fierce rivals Arsenal in a move that ultimately started the reputation he has in North London today.

Given the time he had spent with Spurs, you’d imagine he would have had some respect for the club, though he has shown nothing but a lack of it since his move to Arsenal, with Alan Sugar having none of his recent claims.

Campbell has no respect for Tottenham

Perhaps as expected given his antics over the years, Campbell is not a popular figure at Tottenham, and his claims of being mistreated before his departure have fallen on deaf ears when it comes to Sugar.

Via The Overlap, Campbell said: “I remember I was having an afternoon nap and the phone call came through saying, do you fancy United? I must have been 21 then.

“It did go further and he blocked it, [Alan] Sugar, he must have.”

Sugar responded via his personal X account (20 March) with a post that reads: “I was under the impression that there was a good mutual relationship with Sol Campbell. The stuff printed in The Sun quoting him about his departure from Spurs is total rubbish. I am disappointed with him. Shame on you Sol!”

One supporter replied to his post asking why else would he leave Spurs, to which Sugar responded: “Money you idiot. Spurs would not pay his demand at the time of £140,000 per week (£5m per year).”

Quite frankly, Tottenham deserved a significantly higher level of respect than was showcased by Campbell after his departure, and the way he has spoken about the club completely disregards the fact they were the ones to give him a platform in football.

Tottenham must avoid future mercenaries

It is fairly evident that Campbell was only in it for the money at Tottenham, and the repercussions of that have been pretty dismal in North London.

However, Tottenham need to avoid that in the future by signing players who want one thing and one thing only; to represent this great club.

Things haven’t been easy for Tottenham this season, though, with meticulous decision-making and using the past to deter them from repeating errors, situations like this can be avoided in the future.

Tottenham will care less about what Campbell has to say about the club 24 years after his exit, with bigger fish to fry currently as they look to achieve success in the Europa League.
