Alan Shearer makes ‘ugly’ Tottenham claim amid Ange Postecoglou sack fears

Alan Shearer has made his thoughts about Ange Postecoglou clear amid uncertainty around his Tottenham future.

Postecoglou is under immense pressure at Tottenham, as the North London giants sit 15th in the Premier League after losing 17 games this season.

The only reason that Daniel Levy has not sacked the 59-year-old yet is that Spurs are still active in the UEFA Europa League, having beaten Eintracht Frankfurt to qualify for the semi-finals.

Winning the European competition is the Premier League club’s only chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season, and Postecoglou’s future could depend on that.

Shearer makes ‘dreadful’ Tottenham admission

Assessing Postecoglou’s future, Shearer has insisted that the former Celtic boss will struggle to avoid the sack at Tottenham unless he starts delivering results.

The Newcastle icon fears that the Greek-Australian will be sacked soon as Spurs have been ‘dreadful’ under him this season.

However, he also expressed his admiration for Postecoglou, having been impressed by the manager’s confidence in himself and his playing style.

Shearer, though, is of the view that things could turn ‘ugly’ for Postecoglou at Tottenham if he does not lead them to Europa League glory.

“You know as a manager if you don’t deliver results or what you promise, then ultimately you’ll lose your job and the position that Spurs are in, in the Premier League, they’ve been dreadful”, Shearer wrote in his column on the Betfair website (18 April).

“I admire the way Ange Postecoglou comes out, sticks up for his principles and wants to fight his corner. I admire his bullishness. If you can’t back yourself, then there’s a problem.

“The rule is, you have to go out and produce. Spurs haven’t, and if they get knocked out of the Europa League, I think it’ll turn pretty ugly at Spurs.”

Postecoglou can turn things around at Spurs

When things are going well, there is no denying that Postecoglou and Tottenham are a great match, as the fans enjoy his attacking playing style.

However, that has not been the case this season, with injuries to several key players adding to the manager’s headache.

The Premier League might be a lost cause, but Postecoglou can turn things around in North London as long as Spurs are active in the Europa League.

He promised he would lead the Lilywhites to a trophy as he has done in his second season at his previous clubs, and that dream is still alive.

Postecoglou could not have wished for a better tie in the Europa League semi-final, where they face Bodo/Glimt in May.

Levy will have a big dilemma if the former Yokohama boss brings home a trophy.
