Alan Shearer explodes at ‘Awful’ Tottenham controversy he saw

Lucas Bergvall should have been sent off before scoring for Tottenham in their 1-0 EFL Cup win against Liverpool on Wednesday, according to Alan Shearer.

Bergvall escaped a second yellow card for cleaning out Kostas Tsimikas seconds before he scored the winner in the first leg of the semi-final on 8 January and Shearer dubbed the decision not to send him off as “awful”.

The pundit hit out Stuart Atwell for missing the foul and not giving the Sweden international his marching orders.

“It was an eventful night for Spurs youngster Lucas Bergvall against Liverpool”, Shearer wrote in his Betfair column (11 January).

“Before he scored he should have been sent off – it was an awful decision.

“Without doubt, the referee has missed a foul, I know he’s since let it go and he’s gone to the other end of the pitch to score.

“It was a terrible decision from the referee but that’s the way it is – you have to accept it.”

A lot has been said about the second yellow card incident since Wednesday, with many fans and pundits thinking Bergvall should have been sent off.

However, it is worth noting that Atwell’s decision to book the midfielder for an alleged foul on Luis Duiz was soft. There was not enough to suggest that he had a proper contact on the Liverpool winger.

Nevertheless, Bergvall will have no complaints about those decisions as he went on to score the winner for Spurs.

The North London giants can take confidence from their performance and the result when they visit Anfield in the second leg on 6 February.

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou’s side will hope to take that momentum into their game against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, 15 January.

Before that, they lock horns with non-league club Tamworth in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, 12 January.
