Gary Neville slams ‘pathetic’ Bergvall after Tottenham humiliation v Liverpool
Tottenham fell to a heavy 5-1 defeat at Anfield against Liverpool, a result which confirmed the hosts as Premier League champions.
Spurs made eight changes to the lineup from the team that lost to Nottingham Forest, with their main focus clearly on the Europa League semi-finals.
Tottenham took a shock lead through Dominic Solanke, but this did not last long as Liverpool ripped them apart with three quickfire goals in the first half.
Ange Postecoglou is under huge pressure after a disastrous season, but some of his players have now come under scrutiny, with youngster Lucas Bergvall slammed after his display.

Bergvall slammed by Gary Neville after Liverpool defeat
Tottenham were poor as a team, but Bergvall was particularly disastrous as his defensive frailties were exposed in the third goal.
Cody Gakpo scored after some terrible Spurs defending, and Bergvall’s failed clearance led to the goal.
Speaking on Sky Sports commentary (27 April), Neville slammed the role the Spurs midfielder played in the goal.
Competition (2024/25) | Appearance(s) | Goal(s) | Assist(s) |
Premier League | 27 | 0 | 1 |
Europa League | 12 | 0 | 3 |
FA Cup | 2 | 0 | 0 |
Carabao Cup | 4 | 1 | 0 |
“Spurs just don’t clear it. Bergvall’s header is pathetic, appalling,” Neville stated.
“I have no idea what Bergvall was doing with that header at the near post. It was a free header that he ended up ducking under and glancing it into the middle of his box.”
Bergvall was substituted at half time, and this was a game he will want to quickly put behind him.

Tottenham defeat at Liverpool was inevitable
Although fans will be furious at the manner of the defeat and the scoreline, the trip to Anfield was almost meaningless for Spurs in the context of their season.
The game will be quickly forgotten if Tottenham win the Europa League, with their league results now holding little jeopardy.
Postecoglou made eight changes leading into the game, and while this was wise given the upcoming game against Bodo/Glimt, it was also a sign that Spurs were ready to throw in the towel against Liverpool.
Given the respective form of both sides, very few backed Tottenham to win at Liverpool, but fans will be frustrated that their side did not at least show some fight as they were heavily beaten.
