UEFA release statement after major Tottenham controversy vs Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund defender Daniel Svensson was sent off in the first half against Tottenham in the Champions League on Tuesday for serious foul play.

In the 24th minute of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 20 January, the Bundesliga outfit’s defender was initially shown a yellow card after his foul on Wilson Odobert, but after a VAR review, on-field referee Glenn Nyberg produced a red card for a high boot.

Thomas Frank is under extreme pressure at Spurs, but Cristian Romero’s early goal has certainly calmed the nerves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Subsequently, Dominic Solanke’s strike in the 37th minute put the hosts in the driving seat before the break.

UEFA’s statement, via VAR Dennis Higler, states that Svensson’s dangerous foul endangered Odobert’s safety.

The 23-year-old Sweden international can have no complaints about being given the marching orders, as his foot was clearly high up when he made contact with the Spurs attacker.

With the North London outfit now enjoying a one-man advantage at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they will be confident about getting the three points.

Speaking on TNT Sports 1, commentator Darren Fletcher said, “Serious foul play is the verdict. Number 24 uses his studs to make a strong, unfair contact with the opponent’s left leg, which clearly endangers the safety of his opponent. That’s the explanation from UEFA via Dennis Higler.”

Frank looked out of his depth and in extreme danger after losing to West Ham United at home in the Premier League, but it remains to be seen how the performance against the Bundesliga outfit will be viewed.

The Danish manager will surely hope to be in the dugout for the Burnley fixture on 24 January, and the Lewis family face a massive dilemma.

Spurs have already lost faith in Thomas Frank after latest development

Tottenham held talks with Michael Carrick before he was eventually appointed as Manchester United’s interim manager.

No matter what the result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it looks like the North London outfit’s hierarchy are already making plans to replace the former Brentford boss.

It feels like the Danish manager will be sacked by Spurs sooner rather than later, with a large section of the fanbase calling for a change.

Frank had an encouraging start to his tenure in N17, but his exit now looks inevitable.
