Jamie Carragher ridicules Richarlison over Tottenham vs Newcastle incident
Jamie Carragher mocked Richarlison during Tottenham’s dramatic late draw at Newcastle.
Cristian Romero‘s 95th-minute overhead kick secured a point as Tottenham drew 2-2 at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.
Richarlison, who has come in for criticism at Spurs this season, came on as part of a triple substitution Thomas Frank made with his side trailing 1-0 in the second half.
Romero immediately scored from a diving header after the switches were made, before Rodrigo Bentancur quickly conceded a penalty on Dan Burn which was dispatched by Anthony Gordon.
Richarlison went down twice looking for a penalty of his own after that, to no avail, with both incidents drawing the ire of Carragher.
Richarlison mocked for penalty appeals
In the 88th minute Kevin Danso wound up to launch a long throw into the Newcastle box from the left flank, with Richarlison marked by Tino Livramento.
As the ball came in the Brazilian felt a slight push from behind and fell to the turf but was ignored by the referee.
Reacting live to the replays on the Sky Sports match commentary Carragher laughed at the Spurs man while referring to the controversial penalty award against them, saying: “Hahaha errr I’ve got sympathy with Tottenham at one end, but certainly not this end.
“I mean I’ve never seen a player on the floor more than him in me life, honestly.”
“He must have thought that VAR were in generous mood,” commentator Rob Hawthorne replied.
After another appeal soon after which appeared more valid but was also waved away Carragher added: “The fact it’s Richarlison probably doesn’t help you does it.”
Romero has given Frank his turning point
Without the leveller at the death it was starting to look like one-way traffic for Frank after a positive start to the season, as it would have been four defeats in the space of 10 days.
There are still major concerns about the attack producing any sort of threat on a consistent basis, and the midfield was also poor in the North East.
But Romero took those issues on himself and delivered a captain’s performance to drag his side back into the game twice, demonstrating to his teammates the fight they are all going to need to show to get through this period.
It is no wonder the embattled manager was so pleased post-match, despite another performance with obvious holes in it.
If the Dane’s era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is to become anything then a 95th-minute leveller from your centre-back to snatch a point needs to be the catalyst for much better against Brentford on Saturday.
