Why Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall was dropped for Sweden draw vs Bosnia
Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall found himself relegated to the Sweden substitutes' bench for Friday night's 1-1 draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina.
While the 20-year-old was introduced to the game as a late sub, unfortunately for him, his time on the pitch saw the home side snatch a late equaliser.
Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres had set Sweden on their way to victory with a goal just after the hour-mark.
Bergvall was substituted on in the 76th minute to replace Besfort Zeneli, but four minutes later, Kerim Alajbegovic snatched an equaliser for the Nations League fixture in Bosnia to end level.
Bergvall won his 17th cap on the night, but his three-match run of being in Graham Potter's starting line-up was over.
But why did Potter leave him out of his starting line-up for the draw in Bosnia?
Lucas Bergvall's omission vs Bosnia & Herzegovina explained
Potter explained why he overlooked Bergvall when naming his starting line-up on Friday - and it seems that the Sweden boss was simply managing the Tottenham midfielder's workload.
As quoted on the Swedish FA's website, he said: "Lucas has played two games in a short time so it felt like the right time not to play him from the start. He hasn't played that many games in the last month and playing four games in eleven days is difficult."
Potter's decision is largely justified because at Tottenham this season, Bergvall has only started three games.
While he completed 90 minutes in Carabao Cup matches against Charlton and Liverpool, he'd only played twice in the Premier League since being hooked off at half-time in the opening day defeat at Brentford.
With just 33 minutes of league action since that 3-0 loss, you can see why Potter might be trying to manage Bergvall's output.
But in his short time on the pitch against Bosnia, how did he perform?
Swedish media reactions, and stats behind, Bergvall's cameo
With just 14 minutes on the pitch, it was hard to judge Bergvall's overall display, but it doesn't look good on him that Bosnia's equaliser came while he was playing.
Fotbollskanalen said that he "played too short a time to be rated" in their player ratings, while TV Matchen said similar.
SvenskaFans, however, gave Bergvall a two out of five, saying he was "characteristically eager to get the ball and tried to get into the game".
SVT journalist Josefin Ulriksson was actually critical of a late Bergvall throw-in, saying: "What was Bergvall doing there? A very strange throw-in to the first Bosnian available."
Sofascore shows that Bergvall only had three touches of the ball, which was a tiny amount considering he was on the pitch for 14 minutes plus stoppage time.
He also lost possession once, but did complete both of the two passes he attempted.
Off the ball, he did very little but did win the only aerial duel he challenged for.
Overall, the stats back up what the Swedish media say in that he did very little other than trying quite hard and giving away possession with a bizarre throw-in.
