Tottenham to hold talks with Joe Rodon as Leeds United loan edges closer to end

Tottenham News speaking to Alan Hutton

Alan Hutton joined Tottenham from Rangers in 2008, winning the 2008 League Cup final in just his third game for the club. The former Scotland right-back went on to make 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs before he left for Aston Villa in 2011. Now a pundit for BBC Sport and TNT Sports, Hutton has also joined Tottenham News' team of experts to react to the latest news emerging from North London.

Tottenham loanee Joe Rodon will "want to come back" to North London following his loan spell with Leeds United, according to Alan Hutton.

The Welshman has enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Elland Road this season, playing 40 times in the Championship under Daniel Farke as the Whites continue to battle it out for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

However, Hutton believes Rodon will be eager to assess his options under Ange Postecoglou before leaving permanently and admits that the Welsh international's switch could be dependent on Leeds winning promotion.

"I think from Rodon's point of view he will always want to come back," Hutton told Tottenham News.

"His initial thought would have been to go to Leeds, play week in and week out, do well and come back to his parent club because this is the club that he will want to play for.

"It's going to come down to him and what he wants to do in the future moving forward. He'll need to discuss with both clubs to see if Tottenham see his future there or not and if they're willing to sell is it a factor if Leeds go up or not?

"For the player, does he want to play in the Championship again if they don't make it or does he see himself as a Premier League player? There are lots of ifs, buts and maybes thrown in there, but he has done really well.

"He's looked a confident defender and the club that he's at want him, so he'll have to wait and have these conversations at the end of the season to see where it takes him."

Will Joe Rodon leave Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou for Leeds United in the transfer window?

Postecoglou isn't blessed with much depth in defence currently at Spurs, with Radu Dragusin the only natural deputy to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, so keeping Rodon around may suit the Australian.

But having been a regular fixture of the Leeds backline this season, the 26-year-old is unlikely to be keen on a role as a backup option in the Premier League. If he isn't guaranteed regular football, he will almost certainly leave.

Conversations will almost certainly begin between the two clubs and Rodon as soon as the season ends and some clarity over the Welsh international's long-term future should emerge from North London sooner rather than later.
