Bryan King has blasted Tottenham star James Maddison after what the midfielder kept doing against Newcastle United on Sunday (1 September).

The ex-Spurs scout claims the 27-year-old was "exaggerating" tackles while also over-complicating his play on the ball.

And King - speaking exclusively to Tottenham News - wants to see much more from the ex-Leicester City man going forward.

"Spurs certainly had enough chances to win the match," King said.

"There was a period in the second half when they should have tied the game up. Even getting a point would've been a good result, but to end up getting beaten.

"Again, I was a bit frustrated by Maddison, particularly his antics when he gets tackled. He makes a big issue out of things.

"We're still waiting to see the form that we saw last year. He tends to over-complicate things on the ball, he gets in good positions and gets tackled, and he makes a meal out of things when he does get tackled.

"I don't like that, and you heard the reaction of the Newcastle supporters too. He was exaggerating tackles. We need to see him playing his football again as he was doing.

"Simple, getting the ball and using it quickly. We're still waiting to see that."

James Maddison blasted as Tottenham lose to Newcastle

Maddison wasn't at his best in the final third against the Magpies, but neither were most of his Spurs teammates.

However, the midfielder seemed to continuously get involved in incidents off the ball, which led to him being booed off the pitch by the Newcastle faithful as he was substituted in the second half.

It has been a while since Maddison has been at the top of his game, and Spurs fans will therefore be desperate for the playmaker to rediscover his best form sooner rather than later.
