Tottenham: Lucas Bergvall proves Roberto De Zerbi wrong with latest Sweden display
Lucas Bergvall made Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi look silly in Sweden's draw with Greece.
The 20-year-old played five of the seven games that the Italian managed after being appointed in March.
However, he was trusted to start in just one of those matches, the 1-0 loss to Sunderland, which was his first in charge.
De Zerbi preferred to go with the experienced trio of Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha.
After Bergvall's display on international duty, he may be regretting that call.
How did Lucas Bergvall perform for Sweden?
Bergvall has been mooted as a potential casualty under De Zerbi long-term, but he proved that he can be a solid option.
In the 2-2 draw, he came on with 27 minutes left to play and completed 100 per cent of his 17 passes, per Fotmob.
The Spurs man was brilliant defensively, making three tackles and one recovery in the contest.
He excelled in duels, winning four of five on the ground for an 80 per cent success rate.
Those stats from his international cameo will make De Zerbi think about his role in the side going forward.
Why does Bergvall's showing give Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi something to think about?
De Zerbi will have question marks in his head if he took notice of the young midfielders showing.
The main one will be, how does he fit him into the side, because his display was simply excellent.
The fact that he did not miss a single pass shows that he can be comfortable in possession when he needs to be.
While his defensive duels, particularly when involved in duels, may have him questioning the kind of role that he can play in his team.
His exploits after even more impressive considering the fact that he was thrown into the game, and did not start, as that is known to be a harder gamestate to influence.
He was not up to the speed of the game and still managed to put in a performance that has proved De Zerbi was wrong not to trust him in a pivotal part of the campaign.
Surely he will place his faith in the Swede for the 2026-27 season, at least a lot more than he already did.
