Tottenham: Harry Redknapp couldn't be more on it as Archie Gray tipped for promotion
Harry Redknapp has made an Archie Gray shout that many Tottenham Hotspur fans will fully get behind.
Gray has spent two seasons with Tottenham after catching the eye at Leeds United.
While Spurs have struggled badly in the Premier League over those two seasons, the youngster is one of those to come out with some credit.
The England Under-21s international has always put in a solid shift when called upon, regardless of which poisition.
He made 35 appearances in all competitions last season, down from the 46 the year prior, and is already looking far more mature that his age.
In the opinion of Redknapp, Roberto De Zerbi should now consider building Tottenham around Gray - and handing him a promotion.
Archie Gray already tipped for Tottenham captaincy
Gray did not play as much as he perhaps would have wanted last season, but being taken out of the firing line was not the worst decision.
The 20-year-old played 1,478 minutes in the Premier League last season, which was the 12th most of any Spurs outfielder.
The 18 starts Gray was handed was actually one less than Mohammed Kudus, who missed half the campaign through injury.
However, when Gray did play you could see exactly what he is all about, and the potential he has.
Gray registered 0.7 interceptions per game in the Premier League and 1.8 clearances.
He also held his own in terms of pass accuracy with 83 per cent on average.
That perhaps explains why Redknapp can see Gray playing a more prominent role going forward.
"I think Archie Gray would be one of the people that you look to build your team around," Redknapp told The Standard.
“He looks a fantastic young pro, good player, and over the last two years, he’s probably been their best player, I think.
“He is, I assume, a captain of the club in the not-too-distant future. Even next year, if I was there, I wouldn’t hesitate to make him captain, even though he’s only a young kid."
Roberto De Zerbi can't fall into trap with Gray
Gray's biggest quality is arguably his versatility, which saw him operate just as well at right-back and in central midfield while with Leeds.
The England senior international in waiting has continued that at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Gray played 12 times in defensive midfield last season, seven times slightly further forward and five times as a right-sided defender.
Remarkably, he even filled in on the left-hand side a couple of times as well.
While that is all well and good, it is clear Gray needs a defined position in the side.
That is likely to be central midfield, so De Zerbi needs to focus on using him there and not in multiple positions unless necessary.
Everyone can see what Gray can offer, and there is no point in sitting on his talents.
There is no reason why 2026-27 cannot be the season Gray truly takes the Premier League by storm.
